CARROLL COUNTY MAN MAKES GOOD IN NAVYU*. 8. Naval Training Station Sends Out Item Regarding Carroll Recruit, Joseph P. Vanderheiden.sidS!yaS'From the U. S. naval training station at Hampton Roads, Va., comes the following item of interest to Carroll county friends of Joseph P. Vanderheiden, son of Mrs. Henry Vanderheiden: 'Joseph Patrick Vanderheiden enlisted in the navy on the 10th of January, 1924, at the recruit station at Birmingham, Ala. From Birmingham he was at once sent to the naval training station at Hampton Roads, Va., for a short course of recruit training. This course of training covers a period of eight weeks and includes such naval subjects as, infantry, artillery, signals, boat drills, swimming and gas mask instructions and lectures. During this period of training Vanderheiden was very attentive to hiB drills with the result that when his platoon completed its recruit training he was chosen as one of the honor men of the platoon.Before enlisting In the navy, Vanderheiden was a truck driver, but finding this work not to his satisfaction he decided to take advantage of the many opportunities that awaits a man who enlists in the navy. Vanderheiden likes the navy fine, and is at his request being transferred to Bea where be will be given every opportunity possible to learn one of the many trades open to the enlisted men off the navy. The city of Carroll can well be proud of having entered such a deserving young man into the service of its country and it is hoped that in the near future many more of the same type will enter the naval service.ncit
