CAP squadron takes off with growing membershipThe newly formed composite Squadron of the Ames Civil Air Patrol is off the ground. When R. W. Nash. 1218 Kellogg Ave., was given the task of forming a Civil Air Patrol squadron in Ames, he was sure of one member, ms son. Now, the membership has jumped to 14, with more boys coming to the Wednesday night meetings every week.On the outside, this would seem to be a small accomplishment. But, when the squadron has no uniforms, books of instruction, or even an airplane, the growing membership shows extreme optimism. The airplane, books and uniforms are all part of the overall plan of the local CAP.Nash’s son, Rick, was elected Cadet Commander of the two flights organized among the cadets in the Ames CAP, and last week he presented the Des Moines Wing Executive Officer, Lt. Col. William Shaver, with a sheaf of applications that will be forwarded to National CAP Headquarters at Elington Air Force Base, Elington, Tex.The Ames CAP Squadron will receive its charter, Nash said, in the next three weeks. The Squadron hopes to build the membership of the CAP enough so that it may compete in close order drill matches held in the midwest CAP Wing boundaries. At last night’s meeting, Jack Stuart, 1430 Stafford Ave., Chief Quartermaster with the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Iowa State University, spoke to the cadets on the basics of navigation. Other ROTC officers have volunteered to help the new CAP Squadron as much as possible. The Air Force ROTC unit at ISU, has offered to sell a number of surplus uniforms to the cadets. This weekend, the cadets have scheduled a trip to Des Moines to visit the Des Moines CAP squadron.Approve fire damage repair at penitentiaryDES MOINES (UPI) — The legislature’s interim committee Wednesday approved spending $326,944 to repair damage caused by a March 3 fire at the Iowa penitentiary at Fort Madison. The committee also authorized the Board of Control to spend $403,317 for various projects at penal and mental institutions.State Fire Marshal Wilbur Johnson told the 10 - member committee that he was almost certain the fire in the penitentiary’s prison industries building was caused by a short circuit in electrical wiring and was n o; deliberately set.He said the short apparently touched off an explosion of cot ton lint dust in the textile plant of the large buildingCars collide at intersectionInvestigation of an acciden at the intersection of S.
