Then came my evacuation to the ship.“I heard later that Cpl. Merle Barrows (son of Mr. and Mrs, Roscoe A. Barrows, 632 Wyoming street), a member of my platoon, had been killed only a few’ yards up the line from where I was.“The other Waterloo boy in my platoon whom I had trained with in the states, Pvt. Robert C. Finney (son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold C. Finney, Prairie Du Sac, Wis.), died of wounds received on Guadalcanal.“We were on a patrol and were I being forced to withdraw out of a valley back onto a ridge.“Finney was hit while attempting to bring two wounded men back out of the valley.”Private Hermann, who was stationed on Hawaii for about two weeks before returning to the United States last Dec. 28, just 38 days after he was wounded, said that a brother, Sgt. George Hermann, stationed on Hawaii passed just a few blocks from his hospital several times although neither knew of the other's presence until just recently.A brother, Pvt. Edgar Hermann, is training at Ft. Jackson, S. C., and another brother, Sgt. Leask Hermann, a waist gunner on a Flying Fortress has been listed as missing in action over Germany on Mar. 16.Private Charles will return to the navy hospital at Mare Island, Cal., upon completion of his leave, Apr. 26, where he will learn the use of an artificial leg.*
