Scott Winner, the general’s son.Lonaconing native promoted to generalLONACONING - Robert “Hank” Winner, son of Kathleen Winner, Lonaconing, and the late Vernard Winner, recently exchanged the eagles of an Air Force colonel for the stars of a brigadier general.Winner, the commander of the Air Force Reserve’s 514th Airlift Wing here, was “pinned” at a ceremony at the base Officers’ Club with assistance from his mother, his wife Barbara and son, Scott. The ceremony was attended by more than 300 guests, includingcommunity leaders.“This is a day of which I’m very proud,” Winner said. “I have a lot of people to thank for helping me. I want to especially thank my mother, my wife Barbara and my family fortheir assistance and support all • these years.”General Winner, a graduate of Valley High School, and holder of a bachelor’s degree from Frostburg State College, entered the Air Force in 1963. Following navigator training, he flew C-124 Globemasters and C-141 Starlifters fromCharleston Air Force Base, S.C. He separted from active duty in 1969 to become a reservist with the 514th Airlift Wing here.The general was called to active duty during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. He is a member of the Frostburg State University Sports Hall of Fame and has been inducted into the Lonaconing Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Mount Holly, N.J.
