The Clarysville Inn, one of the oldest continually operated establishments onthe Old National Pike, was built by Gerard Clary in the early 1800’s. Clary, a former resident of Baltimore County, relocated in Allegany County andmarried a local woman,Rebecca Waddle Heacquired 335 acres in the Clarysville area from Thomas Clinton on Dec 15, 1807, and erected the mansion soon after The Inn served as a stagecoach stop for many years, and at one time Emmanuel Custer, father of General George Custer, had a blacksmith shop there Custer later moved to Ohio, where George was born in1839
