Recollections of Dooly.DURING AND SINCE THE-60's.Written for the Progress by an 'OldGrey-Beard.”Continued. 2*l NumberOn motion Col. Jno. S. Thomas and Elijah Butts were nominated by acclamation to represent Dooly’ in the convention that had been called by Joseph E. Brown, then Governor of the State, to consider the advisability of Georgia withdrawing from the Union. The opponents of secession, while forming a respectable element in the county, saw the folly of fighting the issue, therefore offered no opposition and Col. Thomas and Col. Butts were elected to represent Dooly in tliat historic convention, the results of which, whether wise or otherwise, helped to plunge this country into a war that has made historic the bravery, devotion and self-sacrifice of the people of the South, and while the loss in blood and treasure cannot be estimated, yet it was one of those things that are bound to come sooner or later, and probably the sooner the better.
