CONSTRUCTION AND OBSTRUCTIONThe formal opening and beginning of operation# at themunicipal gas plant took place this morning. It will require several hours to fill the gas tanks.The next process toward serving consumers with gas will consist in forcing all the air out of the pipes carrying the product,by gas pressure. This is a gradual process which will require afew days. A* fast a# the city’s inspectors find that all air has been forced from a particular distribution main and the line is carrying onlv clear gas, customers’ valves on that main will be opened andgas served.Last night’s Bulletin said editorially: “The Bulletin opposedthe construction of the gas plant for reasons that are well known.” For the benefit of those later comers to Miami who may not have the information on the subject which the Bulletin did not give, we will state that the “well known” reason why the Bulletin opposed the municipal gas plant is that its masters gave it orders to do so, just as they gave the order, and the Bulletin obeyed, to oppose every municipal improvement of first magnitude which the present town council has inaugurated in the municipality. The crowd opposed flood protection, fire protection, pavements, street lights, and the sewer system, and the new school buildinps for Miami, as well as opposing the municipal gas plant. I hr Bulletin never evinced even a friendly spirit toward the Superior highway until its construction was actually started and opposition was useless.The Silver Belt fought for them all. We are quite willing to let the record stand on the facts. It well illustrates the difference between a policy of town construction and town obstruction.
