Here we are again with news from in and around the town of Lundar,Frost has threatened several . times in the past week, and as I write this the weather is so cool that it could happen tonight. Consequently the rush has been on to get all the perishable garden produce out of the cool nights, and safelv packed awav. Predictions are for an early cold winter, I am told, I guess only time will tell whether these prove accurate.In the meantime, it is a treat to the eye to behold the brilliant fall colors beginning to appear in the trees and bushes around us. 1 guess the Lord provides these pleasures to balance the sadness of losing the beauties of summer flowers and landscapes.School underwayThe world of school is getting well settled in by this time, Lun-dar School’s enrollment is 342 this fall, the same as last year at this time. Welcome to both the new staff members and new students.The Unimester System brought back this fall in the Lakeshore Division is taking awhile to become accustomed to, Principal Claire Mackie said today. Both students and teachers are having to make adjustments in their study and teaching patterns and outlooks.Taking subjects for the whole ten months instead of for five months each as in the old system makes quite a difference. Mr. Mackie said he sees the main advantage as being able to spread the course content over a longer lime, and therefore there is more thorough teaching and learning.Administratively, the old system is easier than this new one. No doubt students, teachers and parents will have their own opinions about the change as time goes on, but it wili be like this for some years now.Women’s seminarThis year’s Women's seminar will be held iri Lundar on Friday, November 13, (a lucky day). There will be a speaker, Janet Johnson from Winnipeg's “Widow’s Center” for the trior-'’ ning session.She will be speaking on the topic, “Going on alone” -something many women find themselves do’ing as their husbands pass away before them, or marriages break up. In the afternoon n panel of four persons will speak and share on the same theme. Registration can be done nt the Lundar Agricultural office. Lunch is included in the day’s activities.The thought of having to “go on alone” is a sobering one, but unfortunately many of us (men and women), let consideration of this possibility wait until we find ourselves in jusl that state, and then wonder how we will ever possibly do it. Better for us to learn and think about it before it happens, and prepare ourselves for the possibility so as not to be caught short. And if it doesn’t happen to us, our li es will be richer for ourselves and our loved ones as we learn to be able to deal with life’s problems arid duties ($-wise and other ways), competently.Mark November 13, on your calendar and register soon for this informative event.A farm computer course is also in the planning by our local department of agriculture people. It is set for Tuesday, September 22 in the Lundar School, so contacting the office soon is necessary. Don’t wait too long, because if there is insufficient registration by a certain time, it will be cancelled. So it is necessary to let Jim Masonknow if you intend to take the course.Help a friendIf you have ever wondered what you should or would do if a friend or relative of yours told you that, she was suffering abuse in her home or from a companion, you will be interested in a workshop to consider just this question.ft will be on Sunday, October 4 sponsored by theEv. Lutheran Women of Lundar and the Lundar - Eriksdale - Ashern Family Violence (Wife Abuse) Committee jointly. It is to take place in the Lutheran church hail in Lundar. You can pre-register by contacting Runs Palsson, 762-5639.The afternoon and early evening (1:30 to about 7:00 p.m.) event will include informative film, speakers and discussions. You can watch, listen, talk -whatever you feel comfortable with. The purpose is to help us all become better informed in order to understand the problem and maybe in some way help someone out in our everyday lives.This will be the first of a scries of informative workshops and seminars in the Lundar to Ashern areas. In November there will be one at Eriksdale -“Coping with suicide”. In January the topic of one at Ashern will be “Family violence - offender and children”, and in February at Gypsumville the topic will be “Women and the law”. More information on these as available.The interlake Crisis Line is I-482-7100, and it is a 24-hour telephone number which is there to help people needing help,Wedding bellsThe Nikkei family of C'iarkleigh area of the Lundar district have had lots of happy wedding bells ring this summer. Two of the children of Doris and the late John Nikkei were married in the month of August.Congratulations to Stuart and Theresa Nikkei on their marriage on August 1. Theresa is the daughter of Bob and Marlene Millar of Oak Point. They had a very picturesque wedding outdoors at the Nikkei home (Pleasant Oak Farm and Ranch). The bridal party arrived for the ceremony in horse-drawn vehicles, and the minister, Rev. Jalmar Erickson, arrived on horseback. The reception took place later in the Inwood ha!!. The bride and groom enjoyed a two-week honeymoon, and now make their home on the Nikkei farm.Gloria Nikkei was married to Bruce Cook on August 29. They also planned an outdoor wedding, but the weather did not cooperate like it had for Stuart and Theresa’s wedding. So, the ceremony was held in the Ciarkleigh United Church with Rev. Grover Crosby from Ontario officiating. The reception was in the Lundar Legion Hali. Attendants were Dawn Noyle, Linda Stevens, Judy Stevens and Melissa Nikkei; also Steven Cook, Patrick McMillan, Michael Stevens, and Paui Nikkei. The stswly-weds went on a short wedding trip, and now are living in Sutton, Ontario. Congratulations and best wishes to them for their new life together.More CongratulationsCongratulations are in order for a newly-engaged couple as well Norma Benedictson, daughter of Barbara Stuart of Eriksdale and Ernest Benedictson of Winnipeg, was engaged to Arnold Popowich from the Waterhen area in August. They plan lo be married on October 24. They will be living in the Waterhen and in Winnipeg, according to plans.
