Applause for the quartets featured on the show was prolonged and loud and the singers were called upon again and again for encores.Jointly presented by the Kiwanis Club and the Big Spring Chapter of the Society for Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, the show promised to be rated by its followers as the best in the four years it has been staged here.Approximately half a house was on hand to hear the singers. Spon-sors were a little disappointed atthe turnout but were happy over the warmth of the welcome accorded the performers.Hal Elder, El Paso, was master of ceremonies for the program.Initial number on the program was presented by the members of the local chapter of the SPEBSQSA.They were featured in a western setting in a group of four songs.The famous Desertairs, widely known quartet from El Paso was second on the billing. These fourwere generous with their numbers and kept the audience well pleased through the interval to the first intermission.Lads of Enchantment, an equally well known quartet from Albuquerque, N. M., opened the second half of the show and were accorded the same approval as had been given to the Desertairs.Climax of the evening’s program was the presentation of the famous Big Four—a quartet of talented and plump ladies from Chillicothe, 111. Flown to Big Spring to participate in the show, these highly pop ular entertainers were presented as the 1953 champions of the Sweet Adelines which is the feminine counterpart of the rrien's group The girls reported their combined weight as 800 pounds.After the show the singers and many of their admirers moved to the Cosden Country Club for the inevitable “afterglow” breakfast.
