M Synge’s “Playboy of the Western World.”Mr. Ibbs was chosen by Tyrone Guthrie, the celebrated London director, to play the title role in ‘ Hamlet.”Miss Lortel extended her calendar into mid-September this year so that White Barn attendee might have the opportunity of seeing the Dublin PlayersSettlers Celebration . . .Settler s’ Day. which has become a tradition in North Stamford. w ll be celebrated for the fourth time on Saturday. September 11 (rain or shine), at the North Stamford Community House on Cascade Road. Its purpose is three-fold: to honor old settlers, to have fun. and to help maintain the Community House and its activities.Mr. and Mrs. John A. Water-bury, two of the oldest residents of the area, will be honored a* the 1954 “old settlers” in a ceremony at Saunders Corners. In previous years, the honored guests were “Uncle John”Saunders. Mr. Joseph McKeon, and Mrs. Lucinda Scofield Saunders.Mrs. Waterbury, known before her marriage as Magdalene Westerman. was born June 1, 1871 in New York City. When she was four, her parents, Ro-sina and William Westerman. moved to Cascade Road, and Magdalene went to grammar school in the one-room country schoolhouse in North Stamford. Although she completed her education in New York City, she immediately returned to Stamford and taught school in the same schoolhouse she had attended as a child.Later, Miss Westerman taught second grade at the William Street School in Stamford, was a member of the music committee in her church, and for three years also acted as the clerk of the church.John A. Waterbury, the other old settler who is being honored, was born in Stamford on May 9. 1876. Hi* mother was Marie Richards of New Canaan and his father was John Milton Waterbury. who was born at nearby Tulmadge Hill.On April 6, 1915. John Waterbury and Magdalene Westerman were married at the home of her parents by the Reverend George Patterson. After that, for a good many years, Mr. Waterbury was engaged in real estate in Stamford.
