2-B—Sarasota Herald-Tribune Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1970Herald-Tribune Staff WriterA Sarasota area television station is scheduled-to open sometime in 1971, it was announced Monday. Robert R Nelson, president of WXLT-TV, said the new stationis licensed to operate on channel 40.The station has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to build* a 750-foot tower about six miles east of Venice, Nelson said.He said, the transmitting facilities shouM provide satisfactory reception to residents of Sarasota, Manatee, CSiarlotte, Lee, DeSoto and Hardee counties.The station will operate on ultra-high frequency (UHF). Statioh officials estimate more than 96 per cent of Charlotte and Lee county homes have UHF receivers. The remainder of the counties to be covered by WXLT-TV are estimated to have about 80 per cent UHF homes.- According to Nelson, the station will be an affiliate of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), When program operations begin, the entire ABC network schedule willb^ carried by channel 40.No target date for the * start of broadcasting has been ’ established, but it is expected that 1971 is the earliestpooibte date, Nelson said.Plans for studio and office locations have not been completed, he said. .-J -The population growth and the relative affluence of the area was a prime factor in the station s location, he saia According to a survey sponsored by WXLT-TV, the number of television homes in the six-county area totaled 113,000,a ranking of 75th in the nation, ahead of cities suchas Moblie, Knoxville, and New Haven.Retail sales totaling $663,971,500 for the area placed in 80th — ahead of New Haven, Bakersfield, Worchester andTrenton. »WXLT-TV is licensed to Sarasota-Bradenton TelevisionCo., Inc., Sarasota. Nelson also operates WBRD AM-FMin Bradenton.
