About the Canvases Which Have Attracted Attention—New Men in the Gallery. The fifth annual exhibition of the Art Chib, Which opened at ClossOn’s Gallery last Monday night, has proven a source of some pleasure and more disappointment. Among the eighty odd pictures exhibited mediocrity prevails, broken in ‘ places by some things very good. The names of nearly all of the members win be found in the catalogue, but several of the beet known and strongest are missing. Some of those who have sent pictures seem to have regarded the exhibition as not of a great deal of importance;. their pictures are not so good as others that they have shown. The work of William Dietz, who has recently returned from Europe, marks him as one of the strongest men in the exhibition. He has one picture at the exhibition that Is of the greatest merit. It Is a nude study of a female figure, nearly life si2e. In this he demonstrates that he is a splendid draughts-ipfn, as well as being able to paint with sureness of stroke which indicates confidence in himself. The feeling of flesh that he has secured Is splendid and the effect Of the light is good. In addition to the nude he has a character head and two other pictures. The character head is painted with a charming simplicity and the certainty of himself that marks his other canvases.
