At a beautifully appointed church ceremony, Miss Mary Louise Coyne, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Coyne, and William M. Stewart of Jop lin, were married at the First Presby terian church, corner of Ball and Broad way streets, at 7 o'clock Thursday even iing service was used. Proceeding the J. G. Hilton in the presence of more than five hundred guests. The beautiful ring sruice was used. Proceeding the ceremony, Mrs. J. M. Hirons sang “Because,” with organ accompaniment played by Mrs. W. C. Ball, who presid ed at the organ during the ceremony. At first the soft strains of Mendelssohn's wedding march, the wedding party en tered, the groomsmen, Herbert Turner and Clifford Condon, proceeding, fol lowed by Misses Mary Ball of Webb City and Eunice Center of Novsho, bridesmaids, Miss Winifred Locke as maid of honor, and Misses Harlara Patterson and Jane MNiffes of Kansas City as flower-girls. Miss Cousin, lean ing on the arm of her father, T. F. Coyne, followed. They were met at the altar by Mr. Stewart and his at tendant, Alfred Rammage, and the Rev. J. G. Hilton, who had previously en tered from the minister's study. The bridal party stood under a bower of pink bride’s roses and amilax directly in front of the altar. The church was beautifully decorated in pink roses, ferns and greenerys, with large bows of pink tulle artistically placed. The altar was massed with ferns and roses and at the side entrances to the choir left large French baskets of white and gold held masses of pink roses. The church walls were panneled in smilax and roses and placed in the stained =sa- windows were baskets of roses. Pink tulle streamered clusters of bride's roses and ferns marked the pews. Miss Coyne was dressed in a gown of white satin with an overdrape of chantilly lace embroidered with pearls. The court train showed the same trimmings.The bridal veil was a coronet effect with pearls and orange blossom fastenings. She carried a shower of white rosea and lilies of the valley. The bridesmaids and maid of honor were attired in pale green silk with an overdrape of self colored tulle. They carried pink roses. The flower-girls wore pink silk, with pink tulle overdress. Immediately fol lowing the ceremony, the bridal party and guests went to the Coyne home where a wedding reception was held. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart left last night for Cincinnati to visit at the home of his relatives, after which they will visit at Niagara and other eastern points. Upon their return to Joplin, they will reside at the Olivia. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart received many beautiful gifts of cut glass and silver. They are both widely known in social circles of the district. Mrs. Stewart was grad uated from the Webb City High school and later attended school in Washington, D. C., specializing in music. Mrs. ©. H. Craig entertained memb ers of the Confederate Dames Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, at her home on West Broadway the after noon of October 13. The business of the afternoon was the election of dele gates to the national convention at Ash ville, N. C., in November. Mrs. D. C Morris was elected delegate and Mr. A. J. Brown was chosen alternate. Mrs. A. M. Baird, the retiring president, gave a report of last year’s work. Refresh ments were served to Mesdames Q. sell inger, A. K. Mills, T. C. Gentry, of Webb City, and Mesdames A. J. Har rington, A. M. Baird and Nettie Cato Hunt of Carterville. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. A. K. Mills, assisted by Mrs. M. Dummitt, Mrs. E. L. Carmen of South Madison street, entertained members of the Lelles Letters Club at her home Friday afternoon. She will be assisted by Mes dames Bailey, Keas and Hammel. A program will be given. The Rebekah lodge ‘will entertain the children of the members Monday night at the lodge hall, Carterville. Mrs. Fred Casner of Webb City will entertain the members of the Shakes peare Club at her home on West Austin Street this week. Mrs. Edward Jefferies, residing in Johnstown addition, was favored with a birthday surprise Tuesday when fifty of her neighbors and friends gathered at the home to spend the day. She was given a number of beautiful gifts. The Rev. Moore of Oronogo, pastor of the Methodist Episcpal church, at that place whose birthday came on the same date, was a guest of honor. Carthage Miss Ethel Lang, who i is to become the bride of George Haworth Wednes day of this week, was the guest of honor at a 1 o'clock luncheon given by Mrs. William Kaut at the Broadview Coun try club last Wednesday, at which there were twenty-five guests. White wedding bells featured the decorations. A large wedding bell was suspended over the dining table, and the dining room throughout was decorated with small wedding bells and yellow and whitees tooning. Yellow flowers were used, and the center piece on the table was a bouquet of yellow and white roses. The place cards were attached to imita tion umbrella roses and the whole setting unusually pretty and elaborate.The luncheon was served in four courses, and a miscellaneous shower followed. Woods of Chicago, who formerly lived here and ‘s now visiting in Carthage. The guests were for the most part old-time friends of the guests of honor. Quotations for roll call and reminis censes of summer visits occupied the early part of the session. Mrs. C. H. Poole was welcomed as a new member. Mrs. Ashcraft was assisted by her mother, Mrs. Overstreet, in entertain ing. The next meeting will be held November 25 at the home of Mra. J. 11. Staley, 1537 South Garrison avenue. The Stratford Shakespeare society, at its meeting Monday afternoon, read and studied Act II. of the Merchant of Venice, the meeting being held at the library, with Mrs. J. T. Withers as study reader, Mrs. L. B. Campbell contributed a paper on “Shylock” and was followed by a discussion. The next meeting will October 25. The Alpha society was entertained at its first meeting of the new club year by Mrs. John Bailey. A 1 o'clock lunch eon was served. The old officers opened the meeting and then retired, giving place to the officers who have been chosen for the coming year. Members tod of their summer experiences, which incuded trips as far east as Maine and to the Pacific coast. Mrs. H. F. Ful ford sang and the call for quotations was on the subject of friends. Mrs. H. A. Wolcott will entertain on October 25. Mrs. James Logan entertained the members of St. Margaret's guild of Grace Episcopal church Monday after noon, and a light 1cheon was served. The guild will hold its next meeting in two weeks with Mrs. Millaed Bryan. 7e*e@ = The current events club held its first session for the 1920-21 club year Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Holt Brett on South Garrison avenue. The afternoon was spent in formally, one feature being recounting by the members of their experiences dur ing vacation. Guests of the club were durs. All members except two, who were out of the city, were present. The program was: Roll call, precious stones; “The Life and Religion of the Incas,” Mrs. Etta Betts; “The Dis covery of Peru,” Mrs. O. W. Curry; “Early Life and Love of the Peoce of Peru,” Mrs. A. J. Kirke; conversa tion, “Can Our Jury System be Im proved Upon?” Mrs. George Brown. The club will be entertained October 28 by Mrs. FE. H. Dinsmore. There were forty-two present Wednes day afternoon at the home of Mrs. George Gibson at the reception given in honor of Mrs. H. L. Shannon, presi dent of the county W. C. T. U., and also for several years president of the local union, on the occasion of her leav ing Carthage to become a resident of Miami, Oklo. She was presented with a cameo set ring, with the initials, “WwW. C.T. 0. engraved inside, and a registration book with the names of all the members present enrolled. Mrs. Mattie Murray, president of the local union made the presentation speech, and Mrs. Shannon made a short talk of ap preciation. Twenty-eight delegates went the following day to the county conven tion at Alba, at which Mrs. Shannon presided until her successor as county president was chosen. The Willing Workers met Wednes day evening at the home of Mrs. George Pinkerton on Rover street, and elected officers, consisting of Mrs. W. C. Hoots, president; Mrs. Sid Bowers, vice president; Mrs. Frank Howell, sec retary-treasurer. Guests of the club were: Mrs. Etta Richardson, Mrs. Reno Evans, Joplin; Mrs. Albert Smith, Miss Beulah Bouers and Miss Helen Howell; Messrs. Sid Bowers, J. C. Craig W. C. Hoots, John Burton, Albert Smith, and Reno Evans, Joplin. The club will meet next Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. Sid Bowers, 1024 River street, Mrs. G. H. Broscius and Miss Mary Schooler entertained for Miss Ethel Lang at 1 o'clock luncheon Thurs day afternoon, complimentary to the approaching wedding of Miss Lang to George Haworth. Guests in addition to the guest of honor were: Mrs. St. S. Rogers Miss Ruth Lang and Miss Elizabeth Showmaker of Attlanta, Ga., and Miss Lucille Fulkerson of St. Jo seph, Mo., here as guests at the Lang home for the wedding.
