CELEBRATE THEIR GOLDEN WEDDINGJust after the Civil War, on Occ. 11, 1866, a quiet wedding took place near Kyans between Martin B. Eckert and Miss Alice Howard, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Joseph Main. Sunday, at their home in Birdseye, surrounded with children and grandchildren, they celebrated the golden anniversary of their wedding. A big dinner was prepared and as many as could be were seated at the first table. The smaller grandchildren had a low table of their own. Although this has been a dry summer yet one could not tell it from the amount of food.After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Eckert settled down on a farm near Kyaoa. Then abont thirty years ago Mr. Eckert sold this farm and bought a faroi one mile north of Siberia. He added to this tract until he became one of the largest landowners in Dubois county. In December 1905, they moved to Birdseye where they have since lived.They arc the parents of twelve living children. They are Mrs. Mary C. Havens, John, George, Jesse J , Charles L., Samuel, Edward, El vie, Mrs. Viola Ingle, Mrs. Maggie Howe, Mrs. Inez Cummins and Mrs Elsie Cummins. All are married except Edward. There are forty grandchildren and one great granddaughter,Mr. Eckert served through the Civil War in Co. K, 38th Indiana Infantry and was mustered out a second lieutenant. He has served Jefferson township as assessor and trustee.
