The golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mertes, 886 Chestnut Street, Newport, was celebrated guietly Saturday at their home.Mr. and Mrs. Mertes were married October 7, 1888, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Newport. Both have been lifelong residents of Newport, Mr. Mertes is 70 and his wife is 68.The couple has five children, 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.The children, with their families, aided in the celebration Saturday. They are: Mr. and Mrs Frank Kaufman, Newport;; Mr. and Mrs. Oeorge Tor line, Covington; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Knephle, Ft. Thomas; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mertes, Ludlow, and Joseph Mertes, Jr., at home.
