COURT NKWS.i I*-4' ■ *3 o i • * ^L ek-^j ^ ^’Squire Jamra I^jscn His Fee—Breachof Promise—The Shipman*Patterson' Can**.•Squire James, of the Probate Court, was flim-flammed yesterday for the first time in five years, and by a process entirely new, Edward Griewe, a teamster, aged 22, residing in St Bernard, took out a license yesterday to wed Nellie Reardon, also 22, and resident in Norwood. He then called upon the ’Squire and asked him to perform the marriage ceremony, which the ’Squiredid, with accustomed grace and dignity. Griewe then asked if the 'Squire could not keep the marriage out of the papers, and seemed very anxious on this subject The ’Squire replied that he had nothing to do with such matters and referred him to Charlie Weidner, the marriage license clerk. Thereupon the gallant Edward tlpjed his newly made bride the wink and, after a whispered confab, excused himself for a moment and stepped to the clerk's office. In a moment the bride followed him. The ’Squire waited a moment for them to return and plank down the customary $2. He isstill wal.ing. * *The clerks In the office are of the opinion that the job was set up on the ’Squire before the couple entered his room, and they J bantered that worthy official a good deal, suggesting among other things that he had better demand his pay in advance In the future.As to the ’Squire he deolares that he was never more astonished in hiis life, but he has a remedy. Under the statutes the legal fee for performing the marriage ceremony is $2, and until this amount Is paid the marriage will not be recorded.Neither the ’Squire nor Mr. Weidner have any disposition to suppress marriages—especially in such a case as this.
