— iip»r—Honored Gentlemen Supervisors of the County of Kockingram.There is a fine district of country sixteen . miles long abounding in agricultural and mineral resources, adorned with well tilled fields and comlortable homes, lying on both . sides of the beautiful Shenandoah between ; the new bora city of Elkton and the re-a centljrresurrected head of navigation, Port Republic, inhabited by progressive men and women, true to the interest of Rockingham, and who rejoice in the fact that . by your Intelligent policy the good old county stands to day in an advanced rank of progress. The narrow roads widened ■ and improved, her creeks and rivers span* [ ded with substantial bridges, and an appro-r priation made sufficient, with supplement 1 added, to span the Shenandoah at Island ® Ford with a substantial iron bridge.The immediate construction of the bridge at Island Ford is essential to the further ; development of the business of this stirnng community. Intercourse between the inhabitants separated by the river is difficult and dangerous, and at Ligh water impossible.The people of this community justly claim that The biidge should be put up at the expense of the county, in view of the fact that the location is of easy access to the general public, and besides, it is on the . best, shortest and oldest established county road leading from the county seat to the Shenandoah Valley Railroad; to Simmons* Gap, in the Blue Ridge, also to a fine mineral and agricultural section, the develop-- ment of which will greatly add to the * revenue of the county ; that the location is the most central between the bridges at , Elkton and Port Republic.The citizens of East Rockingham have for a generation paid without a murmur, and will probably pay for a generation to come, a heavy tax for the building of the Valley branch of the B. O. R. R. which haa resulted in the development of other sections of the county, not benefiting East Rockingham,And iurther, should this neighborhood be required to supplement the county subscription, the burden would rest on a few, owing to the persistant effort of parties both above and below the central point (Island Ford), to have the bridge located at a place of their own choosing.Your fellow-citizons of East Rocking-ingham feel assured that you will not withhold your hand until the crowning act of your labors is performed in the erection of an iron bridge of massive and durable construction, worthy of the county of Rockingham, at Island Ford.G.
