In 1881, Ed Tucker built a small frame depot He went back to Baird and got married and rode the first train into BigSpring He and his bride slept in a tent hotel When the first train arrived, Tent City moved from the springto a location near the tracks The people lived in tents and dugouts The first telegraph office was in the Hound House It was May 28, 1881 when the first train came into the Tent City of Big Spring A hotel sprung up called the TAP Home, for there employees to live in until they could build a house Can Powell ran the hotel Hot meals were 50 cents He met each train with a push cart and asked people to stay at his hotel. He put their suitcases on his cart and walked them to the hotel That’s pretty good service — better than you’d get if you came into town nowadays,So it wasn't all that bad — hack in the beginning of a town where I love to ride fence.
