Eve., Oct. 14,1943Thursday evening, October 14th. was the scene of the Mortgage Burning at Wayland Baptist Church. Wayland Church was organized Easter Sunday. April 6th. 1900. and during this time two church edifices have been bought, and the mortgage burned. The Rev. Willis J. Winston was the first pastor, and labored there for thirty-one years, and under his leadership both edifices were bought. The only officers that are now alive when he took charge are Deacons Robert Thrower. John Wiggins and Joseph Gaskins. After serving Wayland for thirty-one years, the Rev. Mr. Winston went to New Metropolitan Baptist Church, but has remained our true and tried friend. The Rev. Elijah If. Reynolds, who served faithfully under the Rev. Mr. Winston for six years as his assistant, succeeded him as‘ pastor, and has done a most commendable work, .lie rejoiced in the fact that he was present during the days of the former pastor, and could invite him back to preach the mortgage burning sermon. Deacon John Wiggins has been church clerk for many years, and served in nearly every capacity as officer of the church. The Rev. John Mabry', who started under the Rev. Mr. Winston, is serving • as assistant to the Kev. Mr. Reynolds, and is known as the honored son of Wayland. and is treasurer of the church, ilis record, like that of Deacon Wiggins, stands high as an officer. Some of our leaders, pastor and ministers took part in the exercises of the mortgage burning: the Revs. Simon Williamson, Geo. A. Crawley, E. D. Meade, T. S. Ilendershott/Paul J. Harnj, Wm. Jordan, John Mabry, Deacon John Wiggins. .The church in this service presented Deacon Robert Thrower $10, and Mrs. Ellen Thrower $10 as a mark of appreciation for the church having started in their home. A fine reception was given after the exercises. Mrs. Maria Wiggins, the wife oflt;peacon Wiggins, was chairman of the reception, ably assisted b/ Mrs. Gladys Green and others. Mrs. Charlotte F. Huston was mistress of ceremony. She is superintendent of the Sunday school and has led that department successfully for many years. The welcome address was delivered by Mrs. Rosa Lee Johnson and response was made by the Rev. Mr. Nelson of Chase, Maryland.Wayland holds the distinction of having purchased two buildings in the last thirty.three years and is out of debt. The Rev. Mr. Winston transmitted to his successor, the Rev. Mr. Reynolds, and the people a great legacy, and the present pastor is grateful and deserving, find is working to keep up the standard of fellowship and good will. Mrs. Bertha C. Winston, the wife of the former pastor, was present and spoke, as she labored for years to help pay this church out of debt. Great praise goes to Mrs. Maria Wiggins for the fine dinner. Mrs. Reynolds, the wife of our pastor, spoke words of cheer. Closing remarks were made by our pastor, the Rev. E. If. Reynolds. Long live the Rev. Willis J. Winston for the work he did at Wayland and for the peace that always 'abounded during his pastorate. Peace still reigns under the present pastor, and we are marching to victory.REV. E. H. REYNOLDS.
