Former State Commissioner Hugh Malone’s Father DiesBy The Associated Press An Irish wake was scheduled Sunday in Kcnai for Francis John Malone, the 85-year-old Kenai resident who died in his sleep Wednesday.He was living in Juneau with his son. Hugh, the former state revenue commissioner.Francis Malone is survived by his sister, Maureen Me A leer of County Mayo, Ireland; two daughters, Eileen Lysc of Sitka and Rosie Murphy of Kenai; two sons. Patrick Malone of Kcnai and Hugh Malone of Juneau; and 13 grandchildren.His wife, Catherine, died in 1969. Francis Malone immigrated from Ireland in 1927 and lived in New York, Vermont, Florida and Arizona before settling in Alaska in 1958.He was a self-employed Kcnai surveyor until his retirement in 1990.John Williams, Kenai mayor, said everyone in town knew “Pappy.”He did a tremendous amount ofTimber Sale Involving APCsurveying work and laid out a lot ot the land around here.”Williams recalled Malone was a staunch Democrat.His pride and job was when his boys went into politics.Hugh Malone, the eldest son, was elected to the state House of Representatives and served six terms from 1972 to 1984. He is a former speaker of the House and helped set aside the Alaska Permanent Fund. He was named revenue commissioner in 1986.Francis Malone was remembered among Kcnai friends as a storyteller who wrote most of the lyrics to the locally known “Ballad of Kcnai,” a satirical music about early days on the Peninsula.His daughter said he was contentious.”He thought it was a way of learning how people thought,” Rosie Murphy said.I would say he taught us to think that way, because if you made a statement you were expected to be able to defend it.”
