BUROtiAAItft. —The large number of burglaries which have taken place In thia city, during the last three or four weeks have awakened geheral inquiry as to the reason of this city’s twing so sud-denly infested by an experienced hand of thieves, burglars, and murderer*. There seems tc be not a shallow of doubt that these thieves swarmed here from 8t. Louis, and the secret of their appearance lies in the fact that for weeks past the Alton correspondent of the Missouri Ilrpubliran lias hceu engaged in writing articles to that paper tn regard to the defenceless condition of our city against burglars. Almost daily lie took occasion to dilate on the incapacity of our police, saying: “in fact, Atto11 has no police,” witli numberless olber false and exaggerated reports concerning our law-making and law-executing officials. According to bis statements burglaries could be committed here with perfect impunity, our citizens in fact rather enjoying the sport lhau otherwise. Scarcely one of these articles but what offered a premium to any burglar whose eye they met, to make this placa ills headquarters.
