The time? It was \ probably before Scottsdale was founded, I can picture my great- j aunt, Marianne, and two other f ladies offering a beautiful musical interpretation of the .High Mass. The violin, with its almost hu- c man voice, was accompanied by , the sweet tones of the harp. These two old ladies would look with satisfaction at Marianne, who was there in close suport with versatile and throaty cello. Marianne was only too glad to be left all alone sometimes. She displayed great skill as she went through a difficult passage. After thanking the girls, Padre Pina would say: “I don’t knowwhere I stand right now. Whether to congratulate myself or admit failure. Marianne lias me worried. Perhaps the music is running away with her. Her music sounded a bit worldly today. I want you to keep in mind that your music must sound heavenly in our church.”I would lie wishing too much if 1 were to hope for that kind of music for our church. We would have to find no lesser a gen ius than Father Pina. Now 70 or 80 years later, in the little, proud community of Scottsdale stands our mission. As I said above the means used for its construction were quite in keeping with tradition. The people responded for its construction in very much the same way as that of old. In spirit, I mean. The young folks are now making sure that their lonely Sunday suits are in good condition. Oh yes, there is that wedding in the offing.Perhaps you have noticed by now that I often refer to. the whole town as being excited about one thing or another. I naturally refer to the Mexican people only. The people in olden days did the best with what they had. Distance was an important factor in keeping them apart from the Vest of the world. Our isolation at the present lt;tiine I attribute to a different cause. That’s why I wish the whole town would witness this wedding this month. We will have an old-time wedding. A string orchestra will be waiting the bride and groom in front of the church. We can readily see that music plays an important roll in our lives. It covers our imperfections when we play hosts. It makes up for what we may be lacking in commodities. It lifts us out of a nostalagis moqd when we feel that we are not welcome. Our church is the most important of all, for it is thfere that we commend our sfouls to God. That's why we must have a church everywhere we settle, even though we may live in shacks all of our lives.JJESUS CORRAL.
