The former is a negro of deepdye and the latter u a white girl. The Nichols women was tried aud sentenced to jail on the charge of being a prostitute at the last session of the Circuit Court. . Sho hai been a frequent visitor to ‘‘Carpet Alley,1’ a miserable hell-hole, and negro quarters. When she was tried she went' ♦ *by the name of Stoutt Out the parties►who called for the marriage license gave her name 9 Nichols. Therewere two witnesses at the Clerk’s office with Thornton when he secured the license, and the Clerk did not know the Nichols woman was a white wo man; but he would have known it if they had given the name of Stout. There is no law restraining the Clerk from issuing such a license. Rev. Chapman Harris (col.) united the couple iu marriage. The marriage is void according to the lwv and, it we mistake not, the minister and witnesses are also liable to fine and imprison-meat.■j
