Below: Carvers Larry Bloss and Mike Chonko are working on a scale model of a CO Canal lock that they plan to unveil during the fund-raising event.that they hope will give back to the community at the same time, according to Penny Knobel-Besa, coordinator for an event called the Arts Appreciation Walk set forMay 15.The Arts Appreciation Walk will be a pledge walk on historic WashingtonStreet to various museums, murals and galleries, ending with an arts festival at the Arts At Canal Place gallery located at 16 Howard St.“This will be a chance to become a patron of the arts and at the same time have the opportunity for enjoyable exercise by walking down Washington Street with a historian or artist like Gary Bartik discussing the unique architecture to the C. William Gilchrist Museum where you will tour the African American exhibition,” said Knobel-Besa.The walk continues to the recently painted wall mural on the Cumberland Times-News building, where an artist who worked on that project will talk, and to Allegany County Arts Council’s Saville Gallery before arriving at Arts At Canal Place, where there will be refreshments and a chance to observe or participate in hands-on art activities with artists.Carvers Mike Chonko and Larry- Bloss plan to unveil ascale working model of a CO Canal lock. Artist Pat Timbrook will demonstrate her various forms of artwork.Walkers may ask friends or family members to sponsor them to walk, or sponsor themselves by simply making a contribution at the registration table that day. Participants will receive a certificate stating they are a “Patron of the Arts” along with a free ticket to the Gor-don-Roberts House.The grand prize for the walker who collects the most pledges is a season pass for the Cumberland Theatre 2004 Season, anoriginal piece of art and a gift basket.There also will be second-and third-place prizes of a print and other gifts.The walk is a rain-or-shine event and covers three miles round trip. The starting point and registration table will be at 726 Washington St. Pledges may be turned in there or a contribution may be made when picking up your “Walking Papers” between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.Every hour on the hour an artist or historian will be walking with groups talking about the history and architecture of the area.
