Burlingtons First Junior High School Will \ Be Dedicated Wednesday--Advantages CitedThe dedicatory exercises of the Oak Street Junior high school will be held la the auditorium of that building next Wednesday. The public ia invited to attend; the exercises' are free, and President W. A. Jessup of the Stato University of Iowa will deliver the main address.Open houso at the school building will be held that afternoon and evening, beginning at 2:00 o'clock, and the public is cordially inviied to come and look the building through. Students and teachers will be on duty ready and willing to assist in every way possible.This school building is modern and well appointed in every respect. While it will house a small elementary unit, it was planned primarily as a junior high school unit to serve the north part of the city.The junior high school organization is not new. There are very few' communities in the United States the size of ours which do not have this kind of school.The Job of the elementary school, briefly stated, is to teach the tools of learning—the basic and fundamental facts of mnthematics, English, reading, writing, etc.; to lay the foundations in those common ideas and ideals such as health habits, respect for law, order, and constituted authority, so essential to good, intelligent citizenship.The Junior high school builds upon these foundations. The organization includes the boys affd girls of the 7th. 8th and 9th grades.Careful scientific study reveals the fact that boys and girls of these sges constitute a group more nearly alike in their biological and psychological development. No two students are alike in their capacities, and abilities. Interests vary, and the school program must vary likewise. This period in the child’s life,a “go-between period between the I elementary school ages and the senior high school ages, has often beep termed the “stress period, a time when life is enlarging and a wonder of what it’s all about takes hold of many children. The child ia not an infant, neither ip he an adult.The junior high school places greater concern on what the child will do rather than what it may have done Its task Is to help the ; pupil in the discovery of his aptitudes—the things he can and likes to do. his talents and his preferences.It seeks to reduce the trJal-aud-error way of doing things to tho minimum. When we consider carefully how much of our learning Is of 1 this hit-or-miss fashion, It is appalling the amount of time wasted. Especially Is It costly If the child misses* the right road. The junior !high school is a sorting and finding school where the child Is assisted in# making wise choices for his jsenior high school career or in the world of tndusrty which he may enter.Many hoys and girls fail not because they are unable to do the | work, hut because they are unwilling. The old philosophy of educa- j fion contended that the child should adjust itself to tho school. Failure | | to do so on the part of the child ! caused no concern on the part of :the school. To day the accepted educational philosophy is that it is the school’s business and responsibility to adjust its program to the varying needs, interests and abilities of the child.
