The books have been introduced, by authority, into the Puclic Aipnools of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore Washington, D C., Bt touts, Chicago, and most of the principal places of the United States. They represent the Osthography and Pronunciation weed by the most eminent scholara, both in England and America.’ The definitions are concisely expressed, and seldom leave anything to be desired. for all school purposes they are the beat Dictionaries extant. I have no hesitation in calling it the best practical dictionary of the Rnglish language.’? Prof. William H. George Bancroft, LL D , Bays — — ‘ On questions of orthography, I shall make it my standard, allowing myself rare deviations, or perhaps no deviation, what ever.” Horace Webster, LL D., Principal Free Academy, New York, says:— ‘+ Worcester’a Dictionary of the English Language has been In use in this institution from Its commencement, and is considered a standard work. The present edition, containing the aynonyma of the language, is much superior to any former one, and possessen a high degree of excellance,”? Prof. Wk. Johnson, University of City of New York, asya:— The fatness and compa 6 of the vocabulary, the minute and crrofil attention bestowed upon the subject of orthoopy, the propriety of the orthography, the clearness and exact ness of the definitions, together with the nine critical notes on unauthorized words, provincial usage, c., which are found throughout the volums, ‘are excellencies which ‘distinguish this above any other dictionary within my knowledge.”’ John 8. Hart, LL D., Principal of the High School, Philadelphia, says :—“ The work of Dr. Woregator is, in my opinion, one of uncommon excellence As a pronouncing Dictionary, its value is very great. The principles of orthoapy adopted by the author are sound and conservative, and his method of notation at once complete and simple. The exhibition of authorities, in the case of disputed or doubtful pronunciation, in a source of great satisfaction to the Inquirer, giving the means of an intelligent opinion with very little labor. But, independently of its merits as a pronouncing Dic tionary, Dr. Worcester’s work had a high value as a comprehensive and learned vocabulary of the language, replete with reformation, and mailed throughout with the logical features of the author’s mind.” We might fill volume with similar extracts, but the foregoing will suffice to show that Worcester’s Dic tionaries are regarded by the literary visa of the coun ty on the standard works of the English language.
