Malloy, editress of the South Bend National Union,. according to announcement, delivered her lecture i on “J^jpriagc,” at the M. E. Church, last Wednesday evening. Mrs. M. wasinvited to Rochester, and given an opportunity of expressing her views, in spite of doubts as to whether our citizens would patronize an entertainment of this character. The experiment was in every respect a success. The house was reasonably well-filled with the thinking portion of the community, and the receipts were sufficient to cover all expenses.The lecture itself was good in matter and manner. Were the question simply as to the lady's ability, the audience wo’d have rendered a unanimous verdict in her favor. We were ourself surprised at the breadth of her views, and the profundity of her reasoning. It must be conceeded that intellect, as well as virtue, has no sex, and that women who try can reason just as closely and as logically as their brethren. Yet, it is probable, that few among her hearers fully agreed with Mrs. Molloy. Like all reformers, she is un-questionally an extremist; but it may be necessary, in the noble warfare of mind, to reverse the rule that prevails in politics and war, and aim high in order to reach the target.Mrs. Molloy maintains that the much-maligned divorce laws of Indiana are preferable to tin* statutes they displaced, which gave the husband about the same authority over bis wife that a father has now over his children, or a master over his apprentice. We incline to the belief that the truth lies between two extremes. .Mrs. M. overlooks the fact that our laws stimulate connubial infelicity by permitting the parties to re-marry. There can be no doubt that divorces are frequently sought by parties who would, in all probability, have been content with their first choice had they been deprived of the
