JAMES R. PARHAM, ’39,TO WED MISS CAROLINE SHORT EARLY IN FALLSt. Louis papers announced Sunday the engagement of Miss Caroline Hill Short, daughter of Mrs. Lemuel Byrd Short, Hotel Sheraton, and the late Dr. Short, to James Robert Parham, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Parham, 17 Signal Hill, East St. Louis, 111. The couple will be married early in the autumn.Miss Short atended Mary Institute, St. Louis, and graduated from the Northampton School for Girls in Massachusetts. She attended Smith College and later graduated from the Katherine Gibbs School in New York. The bride-elect is a niece of the late Gen. Walter C. Short, U. S. Army, who once taught mathematics atWestern.James “Jim” Parham graduated from Western in 1939 as valedictorian of his class after a brilliant scholastic career. He was also active in sports and “Recall” work, and he held the rank of lieutenant.He graduated from Princeton in 1943 and was a member of the Cloister and Princeton Triangle Clubs. As a lieutenant he served for three years as a navigator with the Air Forces in this country and in Europe. Parham then received his law degree in 1948 from the University of Illinois, where he belonged to the Phi Delta Phi, legal fraternity, and the Order of the Coif, honorary scholastic society.
