Mrs. Knop Honored On 90th BirthdayMrs. Herman Knop, 506 West Sixth street, was honored Sunday at a family potluck dinner, held in the social rooms of Zion Lutheran church, in celebration of her Wth birthday.Present were all of her nine children and most of her 22 grandchildren and her 36 great-grandchildren, 75 in all. Youngest in attendance of the great-grandchildren was James White, two montns old, son of Mrs, Joseph White, the former Winona Knop.Mrs. Knop, whose maiden name waa Bertha Munchow, was bom Feb. 26, 1864, in Rasow, province of Pommera, Germany. With her father and Stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Friedrich Munchow, she immigrated to.the y. S. A. at the ,a«e of 17, and they came directly to Atlantic, arriving on July 4.Two incidents of the train trip stand out in her memory. One waa the shooting of James A. Garfield, twentieth president of the U. S. A., wtych cast its gloom over the nation and the passengers; the wounded president lingered on until September. Paradoxically, the trip was enlivened by band music from the time the musicians boarded the train at Chicago until they debarked at Des Moines for a Fourth of July engagement.- She recalls when the previous Cass county court house was built, and also that her father, a carpenter, built the house at 102 Cedar street, long owned by the . Niles families.Her wedding to Herman Knop, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Knop Sr., pioneer farmers west of Atlantic, occurred on April 16, 1662. They, loo, farmed west of Atlantic 43 years, retiring in 192S when they (milt the home in which Mrs. Knop still lives with her eldest and youngest daughters, the Misses Aiwa and Lydia. One daughter, Mrs. Louise Zellmer, died some years ago. Other children, all living in Atlantic and vicinity, are: Max, Henry, Mr:. John Williams, Walter, Mrs. Sophia UUerich, Martin and George.Here from Des Moines for the anniversary - were four grand-1 daughters: Mrs. Don Dawson with] three children, Mrs. Milton Moon with her husband and daughter and the Mtsaca Ltteila and Irene; Ullerich.
