WILLIAM S. VOGEL.After a brief illness, William S. VAgel died at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio Saturday June 24 at 9 :2H o'eloek p. m.Only a few days ago Mr, Vogel began to fail and his condition was pronounced serious by his family physician and he wag taken bo San Antonio to be placed under the care of a specialist. All efforts to recuperate his failing strength were without avail and surrounded by his family he peace fully answered the summons of death.His body was brought to Lockhart on the 12AS p. m. train Sunday and from there was taken to the family residence in West Lock hart.Mr. Vogel died in the Catholic faith and the funeral services conducted by Father Jostenh Moulin were held at the Catholic church, Monday morning at 10 o’clock.’ From there one of the largest gath ering of people ever seen at a funeral in Lockhart followed the body to the cemetery where it was buried by the Woodmen of the World, the Herman Sens attending en masse. The Lockhart Cob-eordia of which he was a generous patron assisted with the music.The memory of this warm heart ed, enterprising, useful citizen would be marred by a fulsome, overwrought eulogy. His life was an open book and the people of Caldwell County do not need to be told what manner of man he watf. It is well to realize, however. that in his passing, a representative citizen has gone from this community and many traits of his marked etgirac ter are worthy of the imitation of those who survive him.W. S. Vogel was a son of Joseph Vogel, one of the earliest settlers of CaWwell county. He was born at the old family home on West Fork iuthwest of Lockhart Nov. 27. 1858. When a mere youth he went to Luliag and began work at the carpenter’s trade. Soon after he moved to Lockhart and continued to ply his trade, in a short time acquiring a sufficiency to warrant his engaging as a contractor.Jan. 1, 1891, he embarked in the lumber business in which he was engaged at the time of his death.On April 11th, 1882 he was married to Miss OggiliaMasur who with two daughters, Mrs. F. Strandtmann and Mr#. A. Bauhoff, and three sons, Edward, Joe and William, mourns his demise. Mr. Vogel is also survived „ by his aged mother; a brother, Henry Vogel of Lockhart, and three sisters, Mrs. E. Schneider of Lockhart, Mrs. P. Staatses-berger of Guadalupe County and .Mrs. R. Kunkel of Copperas Cove, Texa#.Mr. Vogel had contributed his share in the upbuilding of Lockhart and Caldwell County.The men who came from all parts of the county to attend fc£§ funeral had many of them been, the recipient of some kindness *t his hands.Mr. Vogel was one of the moat charitable of men.
