AREA/Base says body is airman’sThe Cannon Air Force Base public affairs office announced today that a body recovered from the Arkansas River near Canon City, Colo., has been identified as that of a Cannon man missing since June 6.Senior Airman Bryan Sommer, 19, of Canton, Ohio, fell into the river near the Royal Gorge while crossing by hand on a 2-inch-thick cable, the Fremont County Sheriffs Office said.A spokesman for the El Paso County Coroner’s Office in Colorado Springs said today that the cause of death was drowning and thedeath had been ruled accidental.Fremont County Undersheriff Gary O’Connor said Thursday thatthe body was discovered Wednesday.Staff Sgt. Joe Bela of the Cannon AFB public affairs office saidThursday that a memorial service for Sommer was scheduled for 3:30this afternoon at the Cannon Base Chapel.Sommer was an armament systems specialist with the 523rdFighter Squadron at Cannon.
