40 T. H. TRIBUNE-STAR. Sunday, June 16, *68Hyte Center Community Clean-Up Project BeginsBy DICK SUTLIFF Tribune Staff WriterLeaders of the Charles T. Hyte Community Center area on Terre Haute’s near southeast side are embarking on an ambitious campaign to spur residents of that area to improve the appearance of their properties and those of their neighbors.Nobody expects the gigantic task to be completed day after tomorrow, but it is hoped that some progress will be evident in the next few weeks. Just how long it takes will, of course, be dependent on the cooperation of the residents there. The goal is to transform the area between 13th and 15th streets from Poplar to Hulman streets into one of the more pleasing neighborhoods in the city. There have been limited clean-up drives in the past, but never one of such wide scope as the current campaign. The spark that triggered the campaign was ignited last December when three women of the area—Wilene Deal, Emma Shauntee and Dorothy Sweatt—decided it was high time something was done to improve their neighborhood. So they called a meeting at Hyte Center, and invited neighborhood folks to attend. One thing led to another, and by the time warmer weather approached, the wheels were in motion for a community-wide effort at face-lifting the area.In cooperation with the Community Action program of the Vigo County Economic Opportunity Committee, a housing committee was established and 10 members appointed to it. Block captains to head the drive were subsequently named.Mrs. Deal told THE TRIBUNE that a questionnaire is being sent out to residents of the clean-up area todetermine whether they need assistance in getting their properties purged of tall grass and falling out buildings and other eyesores.Volunteer workers, many students at Indiana State University, have offered to help those who are financially or physically unable to do the work, Mrs. Deal said. Most of the students are members of the ISU Negro Student Forum.Ask for Volunteers Those who are able-bodied will be urged to help in the clean-up campaign, and it is hoped that the operation will grow like topsy as folks see their neighbors’ accomplishments toward making their homes pleasing to the entire area.Mrs. Deal said a list is being prepared of all vacant houses and empty lots for which the owner is not known. Some of the property is owned by the county, and Mrs. Deal said officials have promised to co-operate in getting it cleaned up.All vacant lots will be mowed and cleared of all debris, regardless of who owns them,Mrs. Deal said. She doesn’t anticipate any trouble from owners because it’s felt they’re not likely to complain about somebody doing the work for them.Mrs. Shauntee said plans are to concentrate this week on five especially bad spots — the northwest corner of W/i and Putnam streets, grown up with weeds; the southwest corner of the same intersection, whereSLATED FOR CLEAN-UP—-This lot at the corner of 1344 and Oak Sts. is one of the targets in a giant clean up campaign getting under way in the Hyte Center area of Terre Haute.Photo by Martin.THE PASTOR’S HOME—This is the residence of the Rev.
