It helped a n other company, Cinema Products, win an Oscar. The company is Inertial Motors Corp., 268 N. Broad St. Its highly efficient, low inertia e 1 e ctrieal motors powered the cameras that filmed the Mafia epic; its motors also are the heart of movie cameras developed by Cinema Products, which was awarded the Oscar this year for technical achievement.Although custom designed and manufactured for a wide variety of applications, from automated manufacturing to computers, the film camera helps illustrate what is really different about the company’s technically advanced product.Speeds Up RapidlyWhere it previously was necessary to take several seconds to bring film speed up to a level for proper sound sy nch ron iza t i on, 1 ne rt i a 1’ smotor reaches synchronization speed in the time it takes for one frame of film to move across the camera’saperture. The motors are exceptionally quiet, and any produced by the company will operate on a single flashlight battery. The highly versatile motors, ranging from .16 horsepower to .5 horsepower, have hollow armatures wound on very light fiberglass cores that do not rotate. With nearly equal power, their shafts can turn as slowly as one revolution per minute or fantastically fast, capable of stopping and starting up to 2.000 times a second. The latter capability, along with obviating the need for clutches or gear trains in many cases and an ability to switch the direction of rotation almost instantaneously, makes the motors ideal for many uses. A growing market for them is to power di rectional antennas.Computer UsesOne of the most popularidfather9WinnerADJUSTING(Staff Photos by Rudy Millarg)— Mrs. Noreen Thompson, employe of Inertial Motors Corp.. Its sales soared from $27,000 in 1969 to $146,000 in 1970 to about $200,-000 in 1971. A “conservative estimate for sales this year, said Schmalbruch, is “well over $500,000.What’s more, the company’s products are in such demand that, as of April 1, it had a backlog of unshipped orders va’.ued at about $132,-000, plus a letter of intent from Univac for $136,500 in motors to be shipped the remainder of this year and in 1973.One of the firm’s present design efforts is aimed at producing a super-quiet motor under a development program from Cinema Products. Panavision is to make an order for 200 special motors by June 15.Potential UnlimitedThe company has national and international sales representation, but does no military business. Schmalbruch said the rapidly growing movie, video tape drive and automation industries are “much more suited toour growth than the military.Of that growth, he said, “We could at any moment enlarge by 10 employes. Our growth potential is almost unlimited.
