LIFE ROMANCE...............STORY OP HOWARD AUDEN’S DOWN PAUL AND ILL LUCK.«.His Devoted Little Wife Talks AboutTheir Wedded Life Which Sounds Like a Love Romance In a Story Paper.“My husband, Howard Allen, is asInnocent a man as anybody, of thecharge against him and it’s all causedby a mean, low man who is trying to work his ruin,” said Mrs. Alien, wife of the soldier arrested at Port Bam Houston Saturday night, to a reporter for the Light at her home, 113 Hood street, yesterday afternoon in answerto a query of the reporter's as to whether she believed him guilty. The reporter then asked her for her story of the affair, wmch she readily gave and which is romantic enough to suit even the fastidious school girl love story-reader. The story was one of wifely devotion and husbandly affection through the most trying of times and if there is any man who deserves freedom because of a wife’s devotion It Is Howard Allen. Her story in her own words is as follows:‘‘Our life has been clouded ever since vve became lovers, but we were lovers true and nothing that ever came up has affected either of us in the least. We have even been married twice to make sure that they could not separate us. Our first marriage was in Detroit, Michigan, in January, 1893, Justice Simpson performing the ceremony,I was very young then and as my parents were well to do and my lover was only an actor, I was compelled to run away and wed him. As soon as my folks heard of our wedding they attempted to separate us and have our wedding annulled. They did not succeed, however, at first, but finally they got me and kept me away from him awhile. I then escaped and left home to endeavor to find him and of course was thrown upon my own resources for a living.“Finding nothing to do to make an honest living I was almost giving up in despair when an opportunit3r suddenly presented itseif. A lady waswanted to make baloon ascensions. The salary was good, but they wanted someone of experience. As I have a steady nerve I believed I could accept the position and I did. I made aerial ascensions that way for several months, using my maiden name, Millie Davey. Finally I heard from my husband and went to him and have never since made a balloon ascension and am not a professianl as your paperstated last Sunday.“When I joined my husband the last time it was in Laredo, Texas, last year, a® my relatives had said our first marriage had been annulled we secured a second license and were married again on May 19, 1897, Rev. Father E. R. Chase, of Sr. Peter’s Catholic Church, officiating. Here is a certificate from him,” land Mrs. Alienshowed the reporter a letter fromFather Chase, on one of his official letter heads, saying that he had performed the ceremony. “If peopledon’t believe that,” she said, “let them wire to the county officials thereand ascertain if a license was not issued to us.“All our trouble, however, has been brought on us by a man who met me in Chicago while I was forcibly separated from my husband. That man paid his attentions to me persistently upon first meeting me and has since hounded myself and husband all over the country, making his boasts that he would ge^ my husband out of the way and win me -yet, but he never will.” Mrs. Allen gave the reporter his name, but It is wit held.“He followed us to San Antonio and on West Commerce street told me that he would get that husband of mine in the pen. At the same time he made ungentlemanly proposals to me and threatened my husband more seriously than ever If I did not comply. He is the very man who has worked up *11 these charges against my husband.“The alleged charge of forgery on which my husband Is being held is untrue. The Incident occurred In Stillwater, O. T.t last winter, where a check which was Issued to him for $4.35 was raised to $64.35. The check was drawn by the wife of a man who owed the amount to my husband and was made $54 by her through mistake, as the bank experts testified. Another reason to believe that my husband did not raise the check was the fact that the following morning after it was issued the man drove to the bank early and ordered that the check not be cashed. This looks as if his wife had discovered the raise in the amount. The check was not cashed, but only presented, when my husband was taken into custody.“He is no escaped convict, as the paper stated, and was never in jail. He neither has the aliases accredited to him in the paper. He never even used an alias as a stage name,** sfhe then showed the reporter a number of Allen’s professional cards, aliof which bore the same name, H. W.Allen, one bearing the words “H. W. Allen. Alien Opera Company “I did not provide my husband with a pistol with which to effect his escape, but knew that he had opt. I want you to say that he was not captured in a tree, cither, hut just as he#»
