Dr. Larry Dashiell has been appointed executive director of the new Ecumenical Social Ministries sponsored by eight downtown churches. The new program starts Aug. 1.Churches participating are the First United Methodist, St. Mary’s Catholic, First Baptist, First Lutheran, Grace Episcopal, First Christian, First United Presbyterian and First Congregational. These churches will make monthly contributions of food, clothing, household items and money.The program is designed to help “individuls and families needing help,” according to the organizational chart. Help will include such items as food,gasoline, bus transportation,rent, utilities, household goods, clothing, medical services, prescriptions, referrals for housing and employment.It will include counseling and referrals for the elderly, the socially handicapped, the emotionally disturbed, as well as for alcohol and drug abuse, for victims of abuse, and for problem pregnancies.The central office will be located at 514 N. Nevada Ave., a former home which for a number of years has housed the Social Service Center of the First United Methodist Church.Dashiell will administer the operation, interpret the work to churches, and oversee the volunteers.The staff will include two part-time coordinators: Mrs.Larry Dashiell
