THE SEWER-PIPE GOLF COURSEMr. r. B. Tuttle, the eminentTtmes-Btar authority and writer on Uie artclent end stibllme Scottishcame of golf, is preparing a Ttmes-Star campaign of discovery, the goal being the settlement of a kmc and hotly disputed question: “Who Is the ‘Ooliath of Ootr In this section of golf-mad America?” A Ooliath of Ooir connotes long driving, of course —heavy hittiflgj a champion along the lines of fearsome thwack and | thump, such as baseballdom has In the powerful person of Mr. Babe Ruth, alias “Sultan of Ssrat”Probably Mr Tuttle, in pursuance of his Timca-BUr search for Oo-llathan golfing material, will, no doubt, determine the what‘s ‘the swat of the trhos' who of each and every links Odyath within range of h|s pen and influence and from this flock of heavy hitters determine by competition the Ooliath of Oollaths. And after that 1 would suggest to Mr. Tuttle that he Inaugurate a Times-Star putting competition where flnesse and not mighty drivershlp counts. I would suggest that when the variotM cluuapions of Putterdom. disclosed by competitions In the various links, are sll together that they be taken to the Sewer-Pipe Ootf Course in Kentucky, wltere. do doubt, their hearts' will be broken by what they find confronting them. Out of that mess of dispirited putters will emerge a champion of champions inPutterdom—a player with the pa-Joblienee of Job. •’ Happily for though, with all hi* afflictions he never was stung by the golf bug.The Sewer-Pipe golf course is a nine-hole establishment Invented and maintained by the Cincinnati ArtClub qp the Ohio River at Dayton• 1«Ky jflbt opposite that section of Rden Park known as Alms Park. Although I have been for some years an honorary life member of the Cincinnati Art Chib, because of some liule ability I have to draw pictures with a lead pencil. I kr.ew nothing about the Baser-Pipe golf course until last Saturday when I visited the Cincinnati Aft Club camp for the flat time. - I say it ta only a camp although my brethren of the artistic coterie insist on referring to Its as th country club But that Is a misnomer, a stretch of the artistict;fancy. It was laughable, indeed, to hear the gigantic president of the Cincinnati Art Club. Ted Dari, dis-cusslng “our country dub! -our golf course!” with eo much prideful eloquence. almost emotion, at the mile-done dinner In the Art Club’s camp last 8atnrday.It was even more laughable to stand by and watch and listen to— particularly listen to—such noted golfers as Eddie Weidner, Capt. C. H. Kuek. James A. Retliy. Judge Perd Zuenkeler. A. Bart Hqyton. Walter A. Rowe. Harry Kruekeroeyer, Charlie Battler. Bill Pohlmeyer. Ed Btelnbom, Fred Wohlwender. Jr.; Prank Holder, formerly a Georgia champion; Louis Ripley and others, try their skill on the infemel Sewer-Pipe course. Above them, on a balcony, lurked the artists enjoying with fiendish enjoyment the torments of ths golfer*. Such polite snickering knd Impolite guffawing on that balcony. -The Sewer Ptpe course could hot have been devised by any other association of Inventive minds. Only the artist mind.In develish combination and conspiracy, could have envisioned and conjured such a pudga-torial torment for golfers: the hills and dales and jungle stuff, the pitfalls and the snares and the fearsome sewer pipe haaard Itself. Fancy two such noted putters as Weidner and Zuenkeler requiring an excess of 300 shots each to encompass the deadly sewer pipe hamrd! Zuenkeler. redfaced and roaring frith rage Weidner, pale, angry, baffled. Never, in all the season, did the onlooking listening artists and milestone™ have so much fun as when this pair, unsuspicious. arrived at the sewer pipe and putted with futility and with ferocity; amid Weidnerian muttering* and Zuenkelerian bellows.By all means. Mr. Tuttle, arrange for a putters' championship Ttmes-Star contest after you have developed your “Ooliath of golf.” Bring on your “Davids of Pultdofn” over to the Sewer pipe folf course of the artists for the elimination and championship. . Perhaps other golf courses have steep and frightful sewer pipe hazards But non. you may be sure, has ever been constructed with such Satanic ingenuity as this one: none has ever baffled, confounded and made mad so many patient and skilful putters as this one, you may well belief*. ,ro; i'lt;t:tc*F
