Deputies James Dray and Larry Foster and Auxiliarymen Ronald Owens, Frank Bowen and Joe Nieto were on hand to help quell the rioters. Bowen was hit in the back with a rock thrown by one of the rioters. During the turmoil, the Van Wert officers arrested two persons in an auto and discovered a cache of LSD, some marijuana and a marijuana pipe. (Staff photo)150 Youths Under ArrestAfter Russells Point RiotRUSSELLS POINT, Ohio (AP) — About 150 youths arrested in two nights of rioting at this Indian Lake resort over the weekend were scheduled to appear in court today and Tuesday.The town con tinned mopping up damage from its 10th straight year of Independence Day violence.Friday and Saturday nights’ rioting, when crowds estimated as large as 3,000 milled through the village, smashing windows, looting stores and taunting police, was described as “the worst . . ,1’ve ever seen” by Logan County Sheriff DeWeese Skidmore.Former Mayor Lloyd Pickering, who was ousted from office by court order last year after he used a shotgun during I disturbances then, criticized thepresent village administration for its decision to use restraint and let the youths “blow off steam.“They don’t know anything but brute force,” Pickering said. “I still say this appeasement is no good . . .shotgun shells are cheaper and work better.”Half a dozen persons were injured in the rioting, and damage to store windows and police cruisers was extensive. No estimate of damage has been made.The Russells Point police department reported “more than 100” persons arrested.
