Pittman.Sturgeon and the bride-elect then began seeking a minister or a justice of the peace and as they walked along the street they were followed by men and boys, who jeered and hooted and had all kinds of sport at their expense. It was after nightfall before ’SquireiMe-Haskan was found at home and he appeared on his doorstep, barefooted and with shirt unbuttoned carrying a lighted lamp. After examining the license and while standing on the porch, lamp still in hand, the marriage ceremony was performed, an audience of 250 men and boys witnessing the ceremony from the sidewalk. After the ceremony Sturgeon tipped his hat to the 'squire and hand in hand the bridegroom and bride started on the weary walk back to Bloomington.
