Early Morning Batfli Was Won byflromtn; Barnes Block SavedAm fcWcllsvllle firemen won a spectacular fight against an early morning fire AfiHi 8, 1936 which gutted one store building and threatened the entire Barnes block and the adjoining plant o f the Wellsville Daily Reporter.The volunteers, staging a determined and relen ‘less battle against I a furnace of flames which enveloped the Antoon Electric Appliance store at 163 North Main Street, confined the brunt of the fiery as-j sault to the Antoon store.The store Was a sorry sight- in daylight afror flames had whipped through the large stock of radios, refrigerators and other electrical appliances. The main floor stock was regarded as practically a total toss.Flames trailed joists to cat across the ceiling and into t h e rear of the adjoining Clover Farm store at 165 North Main, owned by Mark Brownell, and had started f eating their way into the second floor offices of, the R. R. Mercantile agency in the rear of the j building when firemen checked I them abruptly.r Smoke filled all of the second* story offices, seeped through The- Reporter building, entered the 1 James Flower store and swepO , northward into the City News j room, eventually clouding rooms t of the Brunswick hotel and causing- momentary panic there until guests 1 were convinced they were in n oimmediate danger.The damage is estimated at ap-f proximately $20,000 of which about- $7000 represent damage to An-* toon’s stock and about $10,000 to . the block, owned by Mrs. LillianBarnes and E. Willard Barnes.'
