MISS SMILEY AND LT. WALTER MARRIED AT NOON TODAYThe First Methodist church decorated with am air of dignity ^ *nd floral beauty was the scene at 12:30 o’clock today of a beautiful formal wedding uniting two prominent Washington families, when Mias Barbara Ann Smiley, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. T. Charles Smiley, became the bride of First Lieutenant John C. Walter, army air forces, son of Mr. and Mm. Lawrence Walter.The Rev. H. O. Kisner, pastor of the First Methodist church, read the marriage vows before a large gathering of friends and relatives of the popular young couple.The chancel railing was ^tically banked with smilax and greenery which formed a pijetty background for the bridal p*rty. A note of color was lent in the potted plants, used amidst the greenery, and the railing was decorated with ten lighted white tapers. Seven-branched candelabra flanked the scene antj at each side of the white sjatin kneeling bench were large bas kets of white gladioli. Palms and ferns were used in profusion, and a gold cross and two gold candies on a small table lent an auf of solemnity to the occasion.The pews were marked With satin ribbon bows and preceding the entrance of the bride, | the ushers, Lt. William Seat and Capt. Robert Rang, placed^ white cloth on the center ale.Miss Kathleen Reiners placed a half-hour organ prelude of bridal airs before the ceremony which included: “Intermezzo,'Provost; “Andante Cantabile’ Fifth Symphony, Tschaikowsky “Theme from the Unfinished Symphony,” Schubert; “Anddnte Con Moto ” Beethoven; Intermezzo” Cavalleria Rusticana”; ‘[On Wings of Song,” Mendelssohn; “Cantilene Nuptiale,” Dubpis; “Rosary,” Nevin; “Evening Star,” Tannhauser; and “Voix Celeste,” Batiste.During the exchange of votos, the lovely strains of Franz Liszt’s ‘Liebestraum” could , be heard. The Bridal Chorus from Wagner s Lohengrin was used for the processional, and The Wedding March, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (Mendelssohn) was played for the recessional.Miss Mary Jane Walter, sistef of the bridegroom, was maid-of-* honor, and was attired in a lo^e-j Jy gown of aqua crepe jerseyj fashioned with draped capr sleeves, fitted basque accented! with a braided gold belt, and; a! draped -gfcirt.*- She carried a tail-!; ored bouquet erf shell-pink gladioli tied with aqua ribbons, arjid her fetching half-hat was of matching shell-pink gladiol The bride, entering on the arm of her father, was a picture qf striking beauty in her exquisite wedding gown of traditional ivory Dutchess fashioned with a sheer shoulder yoke of moussejl-ine de soie outlined with a fichu of princess lace caught with cl us- * tern of orange blossoms. The basque was fitted and the long sleeves tapered into points over the hand. The skirt was softly gathered and fell into a graceful train.Her veil of ivory tulle was attached to a shirred half-hat accented on each side with cluster* of orange blossoms. She carried a lovely bouquet of gardenias and stephanotis tied with ivory satin ribbons with garlands of ivy entwined in the floor-length streamers.John R. Tngleman of Rantoul, I1L, former bombardier of Li Walter’s crew, served him as best man.Mrs. Smiley, mother of the bride, wore a rose gray dress trimmed with imported lace in sertion. Her feather hat was tinged with brown, and she wore complimenting brown accessories and an orchid corsage.Mrs. Walter, the bridegroom’s mother, chose a gray blue two^ piece silk printed dress. Her ac ccssories were of black, and she wore pn orchid corsage.Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held in the Green Acres home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul G. Smiley, uncle! and aunt of the bride. The home was beautifully decorated for the occasion with bouquets of cut flowers and greenery. The mantel was decked with huckleberry and formosa and topped with an arrangement of white carnations. Ferns were also used in the decorating theme.The bride’s table was gracefully laid and was centered with a large wedding cake in the middle of which were lighted candles. Other appropriate bridal appointments were used and the cake was surrounded with stephanotis.The young couple left on a short wedding trip with the bride traveling in an Adrian suit of sheer wool with a blade and rose stripe on a white background.She used black accessories to complete her costume.Mrs. Walter is a graduate of Washington high school witK the class of 1939 and of Indiana university with the class of 1943. Shedent in the credit department cf the Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust company.Lt. Walter graduated from Washington high school in 1939 j and attended college in California prior to his air corps enlistment in 1942. He recently returned from active duty in Europe dur- j ing which he flew 35 bombing * missions. He hae been awarded 1 the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf lt;clusters, the Distinguished Flying. Cross and the ETO theater ribbon. At present he is sta- * tioned in Long Beach, Calif., * with the Air Transport Com- J mand, and they tvill make their home in Long Beach temporarily.
