Biggs’ shoe store at Williamsport was found to be on fire and when discovered the flames had made considerable progress. The apparatus with which the operator at the telephone station blows the fire whistle was out of order and it was several minutes before the alarm was given. The fire com-panys responded but the north company had been using their hose and not draining them properly they had frozen up and another delay was occasioned by waiting until the old town company arrived with more hose. Then began the battle against the flames, which by this time had made a roaring furnace- of Biggs’ store. The post office adjoins on the north, being an old frame structure was soon enveloped in flames and its salvation made impossible. The fire then gained entrance into W. P. Evans’ grocery store on the south of where the conflagration started and that room was 1entirely gutted in a short time.
