Old rime Torture.Dr. E. F. Gaffey lias in his possession the I first-dental instruments ever patented in j this country. They were invented in 1815 | by William Willshire Rilev, of j Cromwell,I the well known inventor, then a resident of ! Cleveland, Ohio. The instruments patented j were an improvement on the old style turn-} key that bad been in use for years and years in the extraction of teeth. The new instru-I merits retailed for $15 ' each. During the j Mexican war the government purchased and paid a royalty on the purchase of many of these instruments to be sent down to the soldiers. One of the instruments is of solid steel and the other has a wooden handle. Both were made lyith reversible prongs so that teeth could be lifted out of either side of the law. The. ^instrument with the wooden handle resembles greatly the style of curling iron used by ladies nowf. The old turnkey would slip about, while tins improvement held fast to the tooth. lt;Not Available.
