Brilliant Wedding.—The social circles *of this city have, for some time past, been ail agog concerning an event which reached its culmination last evening, in the marriage of Mise Mary L. Whttmer, eldest daughter of onr esteemed fellow citizen, Peter Whitmer, Esq. Mr. Wbitmer came to this city early In the spring of ’62, and instead of the beautiful and prosperous city of today, found an uninviting village of twelve or fifteen hundred inhabitants. Like many others who were crowding in upon us at that time, the capital whlob he brought from his Pennsylvania home consisted mainly, if not entirely, in an honest heart and willing hands. Upon this enduring basis was laid the foundation for his, present ample fortune. (During ail these years (almost a quarter of a century) Mr. Wbitmer has been prominently and actively identified with the business interests of this community, and has at all times maintained a high character for prompt business integrity and fair dealing.For more than seveuteen years of this time, he was largely engaged in the lumber trade, which was terminated ouly a little more (than a year ago, hy his withdrawal from the firm of Whitmer dt Mitchell. When the stock company which own and operate the Chair Factory of this city was organized, Mr. Whitmer was unanimously called to the Presidency of the company, and still presides in that capacity ovsr the allairs of that institution. For two years be has been One of the representatives of this township In the County Board of Supervisors, and has been of great service in the solution of the many complicated questions arisingoutofthe new law coucerning fees and salaries ’of county officers. Almost immmedi-ateiy upon retiring from the lumber trade lie was made President of the Peoples’ Bank of this city, the duties of which position he oontiunee to fulfil Though without experience in banking his thorough knowledge of oorrect business principles, together with his keen sagacious judgment of men,has rendered his services of great value to tl)e bauk. He was married to Mise Lucy McDinaJd, iu|Fehruary, U*o6, and the daughter last evening given in marriage was the eldest of this union.Dr. Asa Hooper, whose good fortune it was U) be bridegroom upon tbis oc-oaaion, is a son of Mr. John C. Hooper, an old resident and much respected citizen of Pike county in this State. The Doctor has but recently graduated at the Americau Medical College of Bfc. Lee is. Missouri, and will soon enter upon the practice of bis profession in this city or elsewhere.Though the evening was unpropl-tlous and the mud Intolerable, tbe spacious parlors were densely packed with invited guests, end at precisely 8;30 o’clock, the procession, led by Dr. Hot)be, entered in the following order :First, attendants Mr. E. T. Will isms of Bpriugfleld end Miss Bailie Will-Lams of this oily ; second, attendants Mr. J. It. Brooks of this city and Mias Maggie Leeds of Springfield; third, attendants Mr. M. M. Jeflerson of L«-Fayetto, Ind., and Miss Hetiie Locr of this city. Next oauie the bride groom who was neatly arrayed in the conventional suit of black with white tie, hearing upon bis arm Mrs. Whitmer, the bride’s mother ; immediately following came Mr. Whitmer with his daughter, the bride, who was elegantly attired in a beautiful white silk, of the finest texture and elaboratffiy trimmed. Gracefully re leasing her father’s arm she assumed her piaoe to the left of the groom. The nuptials were solemnized in a beautiful and impressive ceremony, by Rev. A. t. While this was being done we made a survey of the bridal presents, and found among them many testimonials of regard wbich will be a source of pleasure to them in future years.At about 10 o’clock, some eighteen of tbe young and active geatlsmeo of the company were eeieoied se waiters, end soon tbe eoene of joy and tiapp ▼ ness was changed to one of pleasure end refreshment, hud an hour later many of tbe company were seeking their carriages for the home trip.
