GRETNABILL HITSCROWN POINTSenator Egan of Gary to Introduce Bill Which Will Hurt Crown PointfSPECIAL TO THE TIMESJINDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 16. Aimed at Crown Point and Evansville, the two principal Gretna Greens of Indiana, a bill will be introduced in the state senate by Senator Fred Egan, Gary democrat, to discourage out of state couples from being: married in Indiana.Senator Egan’s measure would have all prospective brides and grooms post a five-day notice of intention to wed.Announcement of the proposed billcame as a surprise to democratic leaders, inasmuch as both Evansville and Crown Point are controlled by the democratic party.Egan eaid his bill is not to be construed as an attack on the democratic county clerks in the two Gretna Greens.‘‘I am firmly convinced.” he said, that Indiana’s marriage laws aretoo loosely applied a nd that a great number of out of state marriages performed in our commonwealth are unnecessary. That belief is founded on the fact that a large number of Crown Point and Evansville marriages either are annulled or wind up in the divorce courts.‘‘A five-day notice of intention to wed will eliminate undesirable marriages and will thus end an abuse which gives Indiana, no end of adverse publicity.”4I
