UAL I HI II V/ M iUW t I ill t •--A Steamboatmau’s Rcmlnegceneeg,To the Editor of The Gnz'ette:Away back in the forties there were running on the river between St. Louis and St. Paul the following steamboats: Senator, Oswego, Danube, Cora, Lynx, Osprey, Tempest, Wisconsin, Uncle Toby, Bridgewater, Little Dove, Alps and Financier. All of the above boats but the Danube, Tempest and Financier were side wheel, siugle engine boats. The Financier was a stern wheel boa?, and the first of the kind I ever saw. She was commanded by Captain King, who lived here, on North Main s'reet. in the | brick bouse now occupied by Mrs. Fogel. The Financier is yet remem-bered as the boat that run on a rock be* j low Rock I-land. Dear Buffalo, and brokeher boilers apart, which caused the deathof the captain's, son, Wm. King, and the head engineer, who were off watch and asleep in a room near the boilers, into which the steam rushed and scalded them to death, Wm. King was u pilot, and a quiet, peaceful young man. likedby all his acquaintances. He was buriedhere in Aspen Grove. The head engineer was buried at Buffalo, and they are quietly sleeping until Gabriel blows for the second watch. Old Timer.
