w CUIU UU OUCU UCCU io UU i etui u..About 1879 William Gilley married Eunice, daughter of John Bunker, whowith his father, four brothers, Silas, Aaron, Isaac and Benjamin, with two other sisters, Mary and Hannah, were at Mount Desert before the Revolution. Themother of Eunice Bunker Gilley came from York, Maine, and her maiden namewas Young. John Bunker was a descendent of John of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, who was a son of James of Dover. This James Bunker had a grant of land in Dover, N. H., in 1652 upon which he settled, built a garrison there in 1675, which he, his son James and others in 1694, defended successfully against a terrific Indian attack. This James was probably an elder son of George Bunker who settled at Charlestown, Mass., in 1634, whose surname has been perpetuated in American history, because he chanced to own a hilly field upon which, nearly a century and a half later, the British and Colonial troops clashed in the Battle of Bunker Hill.John Bunker, the father of William Gilley’s wife, Eunice, was the “Cap'en Jack” who, when the people of Mount Desert were in dire straits because of lack of food at one time during the Revolution, paddled in a canoe from Somes' Sound to Wiscasset and there with one companion, “cut out” a British vessel loaded with provisions, which he successfully navigated to Southwest Harbor, where the much needed cargo was distributed.William and Eunice Bunker Gilley were the parents of many children, eight of whom grew to maturity and married:1. John, b. 1780, m. Hannah Richardson Dec. 5, 1809. Lived on GreatCranberry I. Hannah was a 2nd wife.2. William, b. 1782, d. 1872, m. Nov. 30, Hannah, dau. of Jacob and HannahBoynton Lurvey. They were the first settlers on Baker’s I. 1807. Parents of John Gilley.3. Eunice, m. John Hamilton, Sept. 18, 1805. Removed to Sedgwick. Numerous descendents, Sedgwick, Bluehill, Brooklin.4. Mary, b. 1796, m. Benjamin Stan wood of Eden. Their only dau. MaryAnn b. July 22, 1816.. d. Dec. 23, 1888, m. Edwin Hadlock of LittleCranberry I. Edwin and Mary Ann Stanwood Hadlock were parents of Col. Wm. E. Capt. Gilbert T. and Harvey D. Hadlock; grandparents of Walter and George Hadlock and Agnes Hadlock Spur ling (Mas. Everett La Mont) of Little Cranberry I. and Edwin Harvey Hadlock of San Francisco, Cal.5. Abigail, m. Samuel Lurvey, June 12, 1816. Many descendents on MountDesert and vicinity. Two great grandsons, Eugene Norwood and Everett Torry were killed in World War.6. Francis, m. Ruth Gott, Oct. 14, 1807. Purchased large tract of land onPlacentia, removed after 1839 to Orland. Many descendents in Bucksport and vicinity.7. Benjamin, b. about 1798, m. Abigail Manchester Oct. 3, 1818. Settledat Southwest Harbor, ancestors of the Gilleys there.8. Joseph, d. 1849, lost at sea, m. 1, Margaret D. Wasgatt who d. young.No children, m. 2, Abigail Parker dau. of Silas, Jr., and Lois Hadlock Parker. Lois was sister of Samuel Hadlock of Little Cranberry Joseph and Abigail lived at Norwood’s Cove but when her father became too old to cultivate his farm at Trenton they moved to Trenton to take care of the old folks. Abigail d. April 27, 1S49 and Joseph was lost at sea about the same time. So neither one knew of the other’s death. Their children were brought up by Lois Hadlock Parker.
