Mr. and Mrs. Ashburn were going to celebrate on this occasion but because Mrs. Ashburn was not feeling well that day. they gave up the plan.Janies Ashburn, the son of George and Christina Ashburn, was born in Bloomington, Illinois. August 26, 1845. When he was five years of age. he moved with his parents to Missouri, where they remained until he was 17 years old and then moved to Hopklnton, Iowa, Delaware county, where they lived for several years. Mr. Ashburn was in the Union army during the Civil war. He enlisted in Co. G. 6th Iowa Cavalry and served for three years. At the close of the war, Mr. Ashburn returned to Delaware county, where he was engaged in farming.On February 17, 1869, at Hopklnton, Iowa, Mr. Ashburn was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane Me-Ardle, the daughter of James and Mary McArdale of Hopklnton. She was born Mary 7, 1S50, at Susquehanna. Dennsly vanin. When shewas fourteen years of age she moved with her parents to Hopklnton, Iowa, where she lived until the time of her marriage.Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. James Ashburn moved to Delhi, Iowa, where they made their home on a farm. Here they lived until 1871 when they drove, overland in a covered wagon, to Ida Grove, Iowa, spending two weeks on the trip. The following May they came to Clay county, Iowa, and took a homestead eight miles southwest of Spencer In Riverton towns-ship on section 32. When they first moved here, they built a sod house in which they lived for three years. On this homestead, Mr. and Mrs. Ashburn remained until the spring of 1901, when they moved to Spencer in. their present home on west Sixteenth and Grove street,Mr. and Mrs. Ashburn were the parents of nine children, Jennie, who passed away In 1920; Frank, Charles, William and Mrs. A, E. (Ella) Daskam of Spencer; Fred arid Laura of Minnesota, Mrs. Cora Laehner of Wales, North Dakota, and Mrs. Edith Laehner of Vancouver, B. C. Mr. and Mrs. Ashburn also have nineteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
