-0- I VLife of Jesse JamesPortrayed in PictureOn Saturday, March 4, local theater fans will see on the screen, Hollywood’s saga of Missouri's most notorious out-| laws, Jesse James, Prank James and J ihe.r associates in banditry.To Missourians, especially those old timers who read about but never came in iersonal contact with the outlaws, the James boys became legendary heroes and with the mellowness of time, deeds of crimes became deeds of chivalry.The Hollywood version has captured all of the old thrills of train robbery, “shooting it out to the last man.” bank holduixs, etc. They have visualized the causes that made these young farmers wanted by the law.Of the picture, critics have said it runs true to life, in most instances, and the variations simply add color to the picture and bridge the humdrum gap between their daring escapades.Volumes have been written about Jesse and Frank James. In those days of horses and stage coaches and wild sparsely populated sections, the outlaws were accused of being in places at certain times that were hundreds of miles apart.They did rob banks and trains and killings were frequent. But in a little house that now stands on Lafayett^ Street in St. Joseph, Jesse James died by the same means that he lived, a heavy calibre pistol. Bob Ford, a member of the gang shot him in theback.Frank James was pardoned years afterwards by the governor and in later years toured Missouri. He appeared here at the old Bennett Opera House once, and no doubt some of the patrons of the For: DeCKraw saw him at that time.Just forty years ago today, the son of the outlaw, Jesse James, Jr., was tried in Kansas City on a charge of participation in a train robbery at Leeds, near Kansas City. The trial attracted a great deal of attention because of the career of the father. In less than thirty minutes, however, the Jury found that the evidence, which was purely circumstantial, was insufficient. Young Jesse was acquitted. He is now a lawyer in California.The picture, “Jesse James, is built around the career of the bandit gangs of that era. It was filmed in South Missouri and every effort was made to screen the story true to facts.Just as Robin Hood of old was the hero of the peasantry and became an idol in their hearts, so did Jesse James become his counterpart in the period following the Civil War.
