Rev. B. D. Roland Makes StatementRev. B D Roland today issued a statement in regard to his performing the marriage ceremony of 13 year old Mary Elizabeth Leggett and George A, Tidwell, 22, in whichhe pointed out that the maniagelicense was presented to him, and not knowing the bride’s age, performed the ceremony.He also stated that the mother of the bride had previously approached him regarding the ceremony, although she did not attend and made no mention to him of the age of her daughter.Rev. Roland's statement read as follows:“To the Public: I wish to emphatically state that in performing the Leggett-Tidwell ceremonyI was innocent of the bride’s age. and that my officiating at this service is not an endorsement of child marriage.“The couple presented their license in order, and it was not with In my jurisdiction to question them * regarding age or legality of the ceremony.
