Smith.Hie marriage wan a surprise aa not a person was made aware of the fact jntil last night when Mr. and Mm, Pates returned from Jerseyville and received the congratulations of theirfriends. The members of both families received their teet notice of themarriage when it was announced in person by the* newly wedded couple. The marriage license era* issued late Saturday afu raoon. At 8 o’clock 1Saturday night a eloaed carriage rolled 1 up to Mr. Paten’ place of business at Temple Theatre, and Mr. Pates wan hurriedly driven to Mies Kami's home at Seventh and Henry streets. The coachman was instructed to stop at the residence of Iter. Q. W. Smith, atthe corner of Fonrth and Albe street Here the marriage was consummated.It was not intended that friends should know of the affair that night so the newly wedded pair were driven to Godfrey where they took the train intending to go to Kansas City. They changed their plans however and stopped at Jerseyvillf, registering at the Commercial Hotel. Returning last night they received the congratulations of hosts of friends. The bride is a beautiful young lady, formerly of St. Louis, who has resided in Alton about two yean. Mr. and Mrs. Pates will reside in a home to be erected onTwelfth street, the plans of which are now in the hands of architects.«c**a
